  • World Metrology Day, observed annually on 20 May, highlights the importance of measurement science in modern society.
  • This day was established in 1999 by the International Committee for Weights and Measures.
  • It commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875.
  • This convention laid the institutional and scientific foundation for a globally uniform and continuously evolving metric measurement system.
  • The International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) jointly coordinate the celebrations.
  • The theme for this year, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” emphasizes metrology’s role in evidence-based and transparent governance.
