World Lion Day is observed every year on August 10 to raise awareness about lion conservation, habitat loss, poaching and human-wildlife conflict.
On World Lion Day 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change highlighted India’s progress in conserving the Asiatic Lion.
India’s Asiatic Lion population increased from 523 in 2015 to 891 in 2025. The 2025 estimate also represents a rise from 674 lions recorded in 2020.
The wild Asiatic Lion population is concentrated in the Greater Gir landscape of Gujarat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Project Lion on August 15, 2020, to ensure the long-term conservation of Asiatic Lions. Under conservation efforts, the lion’s geographical range has expanded from around 30,000 sq. km in 2020 to nearly 35,000 sq. km.
