UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination

The UPSC Prelims serve as a filtering mechanism. It consists of two objective-type (MCQ) papers.

General Studies Paper I (GS Paper 1)

  • Questions: 100
  • Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Nature: Marks counted for Prelims ranking.
  • Syllabus: History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Tech, Current Affairs.

Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – GS Paper 2

  • Questions: 80
  • Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Nature: Qualifying (Min. 33% required).
  • Syllabus: Logical reasoning, analytical ability, comprehension, basic numeracy.

Negative Marking

  • 1/3rd penalty for each incorrect answer.
  • Multiple answers for a single question are treated as incorrect, attracting the same penalty.

UPSC Mains Examination

The written examination consists of 9 papers. 2 are qualifying, and 7 are counted for merit.

Interview / Personality Test

The final stage evaluates the aspirant's personality. A panel of experts assesses qualities such as mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, balance of judgement, ability for social cohesion and leadership, and intellectual and moral integrity.
