Ashok Kumar Lahiri appointed as Niti Aayog Vice-Chairperson

  • The Government has reconstituted the NITI Aayog. 
  • Economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri has been appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the Aayog. 
  • He will replace the current Vice Chairman, Suman K. Bery. 
  • Along with Mr Lahiri, the government has appointed Rajiv Gauba, Prof. K. V. Raju, Prof. Gobardhan Das, Dr M. Srinivas, and Prof. Abhay Karandikar as full-time Members of Niti Aayog.

NITI Aayog:

  • NITI Aayog serves as the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India, and the nodal agency tasked with catalysing economic development and fostering cooperative federalism through the involvement of State Governments in the economic policymaking process using a bottom-up approach.
  • NITI Aayog is developing itself as a state-of-the-art resource centre with the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable it to act with speed, promote research and innovation, provide strategic policy vision for the government, and deal with contingent issues. 
  • It is supported by an attached office, Development Monitoring and Evaluation Organisation (DMEO), a flagship initiative, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and an autonomous body, National Institute of Labour Economics Research and Development (NILERD).
  • NITI Aayog’s entire gamut of activities can be divided into four main heads:
    1. Policy and Programme Framework
    2. Cooperative Federalism
    3. Monitoring and Evaluation
    4. Think Tank, and Knowledge and Innovation Hub
